EOSC’s Evolutionary Scenarios: Perspectives for Digital Cultural Heritage
EOSC’s Evolutionary Scenarios: Perspectives for Digital Cultural Heritage
Thanks to its new format articulated in two days of talks, panels and workshops, the Europeana Annual Event 2019 offers a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) within the cultural heritage sector. The event is intended for professionals and stakeholders directly engaged in building digital collections at institutions such as museums libraries and archives. The venue can accommodate 250 participants, and 150 participants already registered by the end of July 2019. As an event primarily targeted to the Europeana Network Association, the Europeana Annual Event aims to reflect also the strong interest in Research shown by the network members, who amounted to almost 2,500 at the beginning of this year. Indeed, more than half of them daily measure up to researchers’ needs when they concern the reuse of digital cultural heritage as a source for their work. This big community - called the Europeana Research Community - is managed under the umbrella of Europeana Research, a specific initiative that Europeana has run since 2016 in order to strengthen its position in Research. Inter alia, the Europeana Annual Event is intended to support the network's members in acquiring a level of expertise suffice to find the attention of decision-makers. To those who are particularly interested in Research, it will offer sessions on FAIR data, Innovation in Cultural Heritage, and Copyright Exceptions for Research.
The proposed workshop has been conceived as a pre-conference event (with free admission). It will address the challenges and opportunities that the EOSC establishment is posing to cultural heritage institutions. In concrete, it will inform the audience about the objectives that lie behind the EOSC and will provide an overview of the infrastructures aimed at its development. Since cultural heritage is a primary source for research in Social Sciences and Humanities, it will offer food for thought about the positioning of cultural heritage institutions within this ecosystem by:
  • presenting best practices already put in place as for data or services sharing;
  • discussing specific solutions for digital cultural heritage in compliance with the FAIR principles;
  • inviting the audience to identify and plan activities for gathering requirements from the cultural heritage sector as a potential stakeholder in EOSC.
The workshop’s outcomes will be published in the form of a report.

Explore different ways cultural heritage institutions and museum educators can use digitised sources in history education. This EUROCLIO workshop will present peer-reviewed eLearning Activities developed by history educators using Europeana sources, and explain both the reasoning and research theory underpinning them. There will be a focus on how you can easily adapt these to create your own eLearning Activities to suit a variety of collections.

Could your institution integrate its collections into educational activities? Would you be willing to collaborate with others on this? We'll close the session with a brainstorm on these questions.

Europeana Europe at Work collection day - bring an object and your story
Please note that you can't book a space for this session but please do come and visit when you have time

As part of Europeana’s current season Europe at Work, we would love to hear your story about your work, or that of a family member. We’re aiming to tell the story of Europe through our working lives, both past and present, and we need your help. Come along to our Europe at Work pop-up collection day (in Sala Multimedia) and tell us about your work through objects like pictures, letters, work documents or memorabilia. We will record your story for the future, and make it freely available for anyone to discover and use for education, research, inspiration and pleasure. If you don’t have an object - don’t worry, we’d still love to hear your story. And if you don’t have a story or object to share about your working life, we will also gladly welcome stories on our previous themes: migration, 1989 and World War One.

The Europeana Innovation Agenda highlights (2 of 2)
The Europeana Innovation Agenda presents research and innovation priorities in the cultural heritage domain and advocates for their implementation across Europe. Music to my ears: making rights understandable
Limited Capacity seats available

Are you an educator struggling to identify content to use for your learning activities? Are you looking for fun ways to teach your students or colleagues about copyright?

To use cultural heritage in education, research and creation, we have to make copyright our ally. This workshop helps you to understand more about licences and rights statements - how they work, what they mean for the reuse of content, and which ones to choose when you label cultural heritage for reuse or even when you create your own art.

Juozas and Jurga bring to all Europeana communities interested in rights labelling, their established approach to engaging Lithuanian arts and music students with rights statements through teamwork, workshops and a smartphone app. Experience a playful approach to learning about licensing. Get ready to create, learn, label and reuse.

How to implement the FAIR principles in digital culture
Limited Capacity seats available

Do you work with FAIR - the set of guiding principles to make data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable? How do you deal with the tech issues that the implementation of FAIR principles poses to your organisation? Did you know that FAIR will be really valuable if your institution decides to join the European Open Science Cloud?

In this session, the EuropeanaTech and Research communities lead a discussion of the practical issues related to FAIR implementation across the cultural heritage and research sectors. Saskia Scheltjens, head of Research Services at the Rijksmuseum, talks about the implementation of FAIR data principles in a large art historical museum. Drawing on his experience leading a working group on FAIR within the Research Data Alliance, Makx Dekkers discusses crucial aspects of evaluating the ‘FAIRness’ of your data. A panel discussion follows and we look forward to hearing your voice there!

As climate change is becoming a climate emergency because little is done to alter the path, we call the members of Europeana Network Association for action. What could we do on individual, on institutional and on association level to slow climate change and limit the raise of temperature below 1,5°? We will form a movement within the network developing ideas for appropiate actions and decide together on our commitments.

Opportunities for digital cultural heritage and the public domain, under the EU Copyright Rules
What do the new EU copyright rules mean for your institution?  How can they open up possibilities for sharing and using digital cultural heritage? What does this mean for the public domain?

With the EU Copyright Digital Single Market Directive being implemented across Europe over the next 18 months, now is an opportunity to learn what this means for research, education and reuse.

Bringing together perspectives from the Europeana Research, Copyright and Education communities, our speakers explain the new rules and their impact on the re-use of content, explore copyright scenarios from our data partners and the audience as well as help you to get your networks engaged in conversations around copyright.

Finally, Sebastiaan ter Burg tells us about the activities happening internationally on 1 January - public domain day. Let’s celebrate making content available for everyone to enjoy!

Communicating the value of digital culture to stakeholders
Limited Capacity filling up

How effective are you at demonstrating your impact when you engage with your stakeholders? Are you confident you understand what they need to know about the value of digital cultural heritage? And how does that relate to the objectives you need to promote for your own organisation?

To inform their decision-making, stakeholders in the cultural heritage sector need information about the value and impact of the sector’s activities. In this session, the Europeana Impact and Communicators communities help you look at how to translate the value of your activities into communications that are relevant to and support your stakeholders’ agendas.

In this workshop, you’ll hear our presenters’ share their own experiences and then take part in a workshop in which you can exchange your views, challenges and experiences and take positive steps towards translating your impact into effective stakeholder communication. What we uncover together will help to shape the next stages of the Europeana Impact Playbook and give the Europeana Communicators food for thought for the development of useful resources and activities to support you.
