EOSC’s Evolutionary Scenarios: Perspectives for Digital Cultural HeritageThanks to its new format articulated in two days of talks, panels and workshops, the Europeana Annual Event 2019 offers a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) within the cultural heritage sector. The event is intended for professionals and stakeholders directly engaged in building digital collections at institutions such as museums libraries and archives. The venue can accommodate 250 participants, and 150 participants already registered by the end of July 2019. As an event primarily targeted to the Europeana Network Association, the Europeana Annual Event aims to reflect also the strong interest in Research shown by the network members, who amounted to almost 2,500 at the beginning of this year. Indeed, more than half of them daily measure up to researchers’ needs when they concern the reuse of digital cultural heritage as a source for their work. This big community - called the Europeana Research Community - is managed under the umbrella of Europeana Research, a specific initiative that Europeana has run since 2016 in order to strengthen its position in Research. Inter alia, the Europeana Annual Event is intended to support the network's members in acquiring a level of expertise suffice to find the attention of decision-makers. To those who are particularly interested in Research, it will offer sessions on FAIR data, Innovation in Cultural Heritage, and Copyright Exceptions for Research.
The proposed workshop has been conceived as a pre-conference event (with free admission). It will address the challenges and opportunities that the EOSC establishment is posing to cultural heritage institutions. In concrete, it will inform the audience about the objectives that lie behind the EOSC and will provide an overview of the infrastructures aimed at its development. Since cultural heritage is a primary source for research in Social Sciences and Humanities, it will offer food for thought about the positioning of cultural heritage institutions within this ecosystem by:
- presenting best practices already put in place as for data or services sharing;
- discussing specific solutions for digital cultural heritage in compliance with the FAIR principles;
- inviting the audience to identify and plan activities for gathering requirements from the cultural heritage sector as a potential stakeholder in EOSC.
The workshop’s outcomes will be published in the form of a report.
